Home Based Business Opportunity Ideas

Be your own boss selling information products.

We are in the information age and golden opportunities await many who want to work from home writing and selling digital information products.

Better known as ebooks, here are a few beneficial features of becoming an info broker.

  • Minimal start up and maintenance expenses.
  • Minimal overhead expenses on production, distribution.
  • Unlimited supply and sometimes an unlimited market!
  • Variety of markets.
  • Easy to get started.
  • Near immediate return on investment.

Why are Information Products An Ideal Business Opportunity?

The other alternative to selling information products online is to sell tangible products.

Products that must be packaged and shipped, products that sometimes may break, products that require customer service, handling, guarantees and refunds. Selling tangible products are time intensive, whereas selling information products do not need as much customer service. Although it’s true, you can sell many products online via wholesale distributors and drop-shippers, remember that you add even more time to the mix of dealing with suppliers, payment options - merchant accounts, etc.

A Variety of Ways to Get Started with this Home Based Business Idea

Sign up as an affiliate and promote other people’s info products.

Affiliate programs are the entry level to a work at home internet business. Your task an as affiliate will be to attract buyers to other people’s products or online services. The more customers and sales you make, the more you profit in commissions. And you don’t have the added hassle of producing, managing and servicing any products or customers!

Just keep in mind that:

To be most successful at this you should have a website, a mailing list, or be quite savvy at writing ads and directing traffic to the product you are promoting. There are a number of ebooks and guides, websites and affiliate marketing gurus to learn from. Learning from another successful marketer about the ins and outs of the business will fast track any newbie into earning an income right away with info product affiliate marketing.

Commissions range from 5% to 60% per sale with 25% to 50% being the most popular and the most profitable.

There are no fees to get started in affiliate marketing. However you will likely want to create a website, collect email address and pay the fees associated with that, but you can always start with PPC ads to move customers to the seller site without much investment. Then, take that money and get your own site rolling.

In the next post I’ll continue on talking about other ways to make money at home in the information product business.

Home Based Business Idea

Home Based Newsletter Publishing

Newsletter publishing is a hot, hot home based business with a high profit potential. It can also be a very low cost business to start. For example, a $99.00 a year newsletter, published monthly, would cost less than $12.00 a year to product, print and mail. With just 1000 subscribers you could net $87,000 a year. (more below)

Currently there are more than 15,000 consumer and business newsletters covering everything from Astrology to Zoology. Anytime you have a large group of people with a common interest, there is a newsletter waiting to be published.

If you can gather information, or have access to original information — either through your job or your own special interests — newsletter publishing just may be the perfect home based business for you.

The best way to find a topic for a newsletter is to look for groups of people who already have an interest in a specific subject. One way to find these groups of people is to look in the Standard Rate & Data Mailing List Directory. You can find a copy of this huge reference book at any large library or you can buy a copy at their web site: www.srds.com (Note: try to find a copy at the library as the book is very expensive)

What you want to do is look through the different categories of mailing lists. Concentrate on the categories that interest you or that you have specific information about. Find out how many people have bought or shown an interest in that specific category of product by looking at how many names are on the list.

For example, if you are interested in fitness and health, you might find a list of 150,000 people who have bought a book called, “101 Fitness Tips For Seniors.” This group of people would be perfect prospects for a newsletter targeted toward seniors who are interested in fitness.

Another good way to find a topic is to look at existing newsletters and dig out a niche. Look in the library for the “Oxbridge Directory of Newsletters” to get an idea of the types of newsletters being published.

Here are a few unusual ones I dug up:

La Belle France — This 8 page monthly caters to people who vacation (or dream of vacationing) in France. The newsletter has over 8000 subscribers at $47.00 a year. If you like to travel, a similar concept could be used for just about any popular destination.

Family Travel Times — A newsletter which focuses on interesting vacation getaways for the entire family.

Rural Newsletter — A newsletter that caters to people who want to “cash out” of big city life and move to the country.

Daytime Serial Newsletter — A monthly newsletter that summerizes the daily plots of 14 different soap operas.

Old-House Newsletter — A newsletter catering to people who own old houses. Articles include advice on renovating, restoring, cleaning and refinishing brownstones. 20,000 subscribers pay $25.00 a year for the monthly newsletter.

Photoletter — A twice-monthly newsletter for freelance photographers that reports the needs and requirements of buyers of photographs.

Newsletter publishing can be a fun and profitable business. Find a topic that interests you and explore the opportunities.

Home Based Business, Free

Home Based Business - Free Resources

This is a special printing of a recent article found in the Home Business Network…

You probably don’t believe there are really any opportunities for a free at home business when you think about starting a business. Well, the good news is that you’re wrong! Ideas for free at home work are everywhere—if you know where to look.

And the first thing you should take a look at is what do you like to do. Love to mow lawns and trim shrubbery? Own a lawnmower? Bingo! You now have one of your own free at home businesses. A great place to look for places to put your expertise to work is in your own neighborhood for free at home jobs. Ask your neighbors if they need a helping hand with their lawn care. Next, ask them for referrals. This is a business that can grow more quickly than you ever imagined—especially if you do leaf and snow removal during the off-season months.

Now, do you have a computer? Great. You now have one of your own free at home businesses. You can do anything from typing for companies in your area to writing ad copy for companies in Japan. Do a quick Google search, and you’ll be blown away by all the opportunities available for your free at home businesses.

You can also get paid to do Internet research, answer surveys, and many, many other things with your free Internet home business. You might even mix and match your online jobs to add some diversity to your daily routine. Probably the easiest free at home work would be answering surveys. This is something you can do in your spare time. I know, I do online surveys myself.

You can also catch one of the hottest trends around if you choose online auctions as one of your free stay at home businesses. Not only can you get rid of things around the house that you no longer need or use, you can sign up with wholesalers and distributors and sell products for them.

Many of these charge nothing for you to do this, and some will even do all the shipping and handling for you. This type of stay at home business can require a lot of work at first, but is usually easy to run once you get it going. And the profits can be, and often are, tremendous.

No matter what sort of free stay at home businesses you’re considering, you need a business plan. And you need to follow it. Find out everything you can about the business you want to start and what the competition in your area is up to. You’ll also want to check into any special licenses or permits you might need. Some other things to put on your list of things to look into are:

  • Need for the service/ business in your area
  • Zoning regulations
  • Accounting needs
  • Hiring needs
  • When and how to incorporate if you decide you want to
  • Equipment or items needed for your business
  • Amount and quality of competition
  • Tax information

Other Considerations to Home Based Business…(editor)

Another major thing to consider when starting a free stay at home business is your family. Because having an at home business of any kind will impact your family members. They need to be supportive and understand that even though you’re home, you’re actually working. They need to be respectful of this, and in return, you need to be respectful of their feelings. This way you can be successful at one of the free at home businesses you have chosen.

So be smart, and talk about the effects having a home business will have on your family before you open up shop. Kick things around with each other, and make sure everyone’s on board. This can save you major headaches down the road. As well as ensure you have the support you need when starting and running your stay at home business.

Starting your own free stay at home business is an exciting adventure. Just don’t let your enthusiasm and eagerness distract you from attending to all the little things that make free at home businesses successful. Because, after all, that’s the goal of any stay at home business—to be successful.

Applicable to Home Business Too

This article was provided by a business owner with a message that serves online entrepreneurs as well as those of us running a small home based business in the virtual world. As you read it try to think of ways that you can ‘give’ your knowledge away, building trust, credibility and loyalty from your home business prospects.

Give It Away Now - The More You Share, the More You Sell!

Give away your knowledge, and you’ll make money. How does this work? Isn’t this counter-intuitive? Let’s think about this.

If you get early adopters (Seth Godin would call them “sneezers”) on board and they like what you have to say, they’ll talk about your ideas. They’ll share it with their friends, they’ll put it on their blog, and they’ll invite others to try it out. Low risk because it’s free, except high risk because really you’re putting your reputation on the line.

The more they talk about it, the more it will hit the mainstream, and eventually you’ll hit a “tipping point” where it’s the next great thing that everyone has got to have. At that point, you can charge these people money, because not only will they buy what you’re selling, they’ll tell their friends who will tell their friends, who will all buy your stuff.

Another thing that you’ll find is that people that you give things away too are far more likely to be grateful for what you’ve given them, and are often flattered that you were willing to share what you know/what you sell with them for nothing, and will recommend you to their friends, again decreasing the amount of time it takes for you to reach that magical tipping point.

It sounds easy enough. Now, do you have the guts to make it great and give it away now, or do you think you can’t afford to? What you really should be asking is: “Can you afford not to give it away?”

(Editor’s Note: To learn more about Seth Godin and how this type of business practice will affect your bottom line you simply must get a copy of Seth’s new book “All Marketers Are Liars” available at amazon now.)

Phil Gerbyshak leads a team of IT help desk professionals in Milwaukee, WI, and finds that sharing his knowledge is a crucial component in his success as a leader and as a person. Phil’s personal philosophy is paraphrased from Tim Sanders’ fantastic book Love is the Killer App: “Share your knowledge, your network, and your love. The rest will follow.” Feel free to read more of Phil’s musings on his blog at http://makeitgreat.blogspot.com

Easy Home Based Business

Starting an Easy Home Based Business

Become an eBay Trading Assistant and Work From Home

EBay?s online auctions have created business opportunities for thousands of people. Now the Trading Assistant program is making it easier than ever to start a business from home.

Trading assistants act as brokers, selling merchandise for others and keeping a percentage of the profits. The profit potential can be great, especially when selling high-value items.

Though there are millions of registered users on eBay, many people still don?t know how to sell goods themselves. A trading assistant fills a need in the marketplace, allowing you to make a profit while helping others unload their stuff. Almost everyone has a box of items in their garage or closet that they would like to sell.

Getting Started with Your Home Based eBay Business

You will need to decide what types of products you are willing to sell and may want to set a minimum value on merchandise you accept. It can be difficult to make a profit on $5 items, so many assistants require the products have a minimum estimated sales value of $10 or $20.

Most assistants set their fees between 20%-40% of the ending auction price. You may also want to charge a per-item listing fee of $1-$5, and possibly deduct this from the commission if the auction ends successfully.

As a trading assistant working from home, you will list the item for sale, handle all buyer questions, collect payment and shipping fees from the buyer and ship the item. You may also need to do some research on your customers? items to determine their value. Search the closed listings to find out what similar items have sold for and list your auctions accordingly.

You should create a simple contract that your customers sign to indicate that they agree to your services and fees. You will also need to decide how to obtain the items from your seller. You could offer a pickup service and visit customers? homes and complete a contract there. Or you can offer a drop-off service, where customers bring their items to you. Many assistants operate from their garage so buyers don?t have to enter their homes.

Promote Your Home Based Business on Ebay

eBay offers a directory of eBay trading assistants that consumers can use to locate home based business eBay selling services in their geographic area. To get listed in the official trading assistant program, eBay requires that you have a feedback rating of at least 50, have sold at least one item in the past 30 days, and maintain satisfaction rating of 97% or higher.

A listing in the official directory is free.

Other Ways to Promote Your Home Based Business

Here are some ideas for getting the word out about your service:

  • Create a simple brochure and ask nearby businesses to display them for you.
  • Leave brochures or fliers on doorsteps in your neighborhood.
  • Place classified ads in the local newspapers.
  • Place free classified ads on www.craigslist.org.
  • Contact small business owners and offer your services to them. They may want to unload their overstock and your service could provide the perfect solution.
  • Post fliers and brochures at colleges, retirement centers, and community centers.
  • Ask your kid?s school to mention your home based business service in the newsletter.
  • Visit garage sales and flea markets and offer your services to sellers.

Launch Your Home Based Business

Make sure you follow the rules of running a home-based business and check with your county offices to apply for a business license and resale permit. Though online sales are not heavily governed, someday they will be and it is better to comply with business laws.

Also make sure to set expectations with your customers. Since many aren?t familiar with how eBay works, explain the process and set realistic expectations for the final values of sales. Some may expect their items to be worth far more than they can get on eBay, and you don?t want to disappoint, or worse, upset a client by selling an item for less than expected.

If you don?t yet have any experience on eBay yourself, it?s easy to get started. Begin with some spring cleaning and list some merchandise from your home. Make sure you have a good understanding of how eBay works before you represent your services to others.

A trading assistant business is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a relatively easy home based business. Once you launch your business, repeat customers and word of mouth should help your business grow. Your only regret could be that you didn?t start sooner.
